Fancy Natural Language Processing

This is the slide deck I used for a talk at South China Normal University a couple of days ago, covering a number of tricks and techniques in natural language processing.

The starting point for this deck was the observation that many NLP groups at domestic universities are still largely stuck in an RNN mindset, so I went over some CNN and attention material, along with various tips for training models, and so on. The content is actually fairly brief, but since many of the concepts would be new to most of the students in the audience, it still packs in quite a bit of information.

This was also my first attempt at making a slide deck with $\LaTeX$, and it turned out to be less painful than I expected — the result looks pretty clean and clear. I'll definitely be practicing with it more going forward~more
