धृतराष्ट्र उवाच दैवमेव परं मन्ये धिक् पौरुषमनर्थकम्। यत्राधिरथिरायत्तो नातरत् पाण्डवं रणे॥
Dhritarastra said I consider Destiny to be supreme. Fie on the useless exertions of man, inasmuch the son of Adhiratha striving vigorously, was not able to conquer Pandus's son in battle.
कर्णः पार्थान् सगोविन्दान् जेतुमुत्सहते रणे। न च कर्णसमं योधं लोके पश्यामि कञ्चन॥
Karna is capable of conquering the Parthas together with Govinds himself; no where in the worlds do I find a warrior who is a match for Karna.
इति दुर्योधनस्याहमश्रौषं जल्पतो मुहुः। कर्णो हि बलवाञ्छूरो दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः॥
I have always heard Duryodhana speak in this strain. Karna is mighty, heroic, a resolute bowman and indefatigable in battle. was
इति मामब्रवीत् सूत मन्दो दुर्योधनः पुरा। वसुषेणसहायं मां नालं देवाऽपि संयुगे॥
O Suta, This did my wretched son Duryodhana speak to me before. “Supported as I am by the heroic Vrisashena, even the celestials themselves will not be able to conquer me in battle.
किं नु पाण्डुसुता राजन् गतसत्त्वा विचेतसः। तत्र तं निर्जितं दृष्ट्वा भुजङ्गमिव निर्विषम्॥
What to speak of the sons of Pandu, whose energy is gone and whose strength has been robbed, o king." (This said by Duryodhana say me.) So beholding Karna crushed like a poisonless snake.
युद्धात् कर्णमपक्रान्तं किंख्दि दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्। अहो दुर्मुखमेवैकं युद्धानामविशादरम्॥ प्रावेशयद्भुतवहं पतङ्गमिव मोहितः। अश्वत्थामा मद्रराजः कृपः कर्णश्च संगताः॥
And fled from the field of battle, what did then Duryodhana say? Alas, foolishly did Duryodhana send the unsupported Durmukha to battle, ignorant though he was of the mode of fighting, like one throwing in insect upon a blazing fire Ashvatthaman, the Madra-king, Kripa and Karna, all united together.
न शक्ताः प्रमुखे स्थातुं नूनं भीमस्य संजय। तेऽपि चास्य महाघोरं बलं नागायुतोपमम्॥ जानन्तो व्यवसायं च क्रूरं मारुततेजसः। किमर्थ क्रूरकर्माणं यमकालान्तकोपमम्॥ बलसंरम्भवीर्यज्ञाः कोपयिष्यन्ति संयुगे। कर्णस्त्वेको महाबाहुः स्वबाहुबलदर्पितः॥
Are not capable, O Sanjaya, of standing before Bhima. They all know the dreadful prowess, equal to that of ten thousand elephants of Bhima possessed of the energy of Maruta himself. They also know his cruel purposes. Why did then those then those warriors, cognizant of Bhima's mighty anger and energy, incite the anger of the hero of cruel deeds, that warrior resembling Yama at the end of a Yuga? I seems that are mighty-armed Karna, relying on the strength of his own arms.
भीमसेनमनादृत्य रणेऽयुध्यत सूतजः। योऽजयत् समरे कर्ण पुरंदर इवासुरम्॥
Encountered Bhimasena in battle, totally disregarding him. He that has conquered Karna in battle, like Purandara conquering Asuras.
न स पाण्डुसुतो जेतुं शक्यः केनचिदाहवे। द्रोणं यः सम्प्रमथ्यैक प्रविष्टो मम वाहिनीम्॥
That son of Pandu is incapable of being conquered by any one else. He that has entered into my army having vanquished Drona singlehandedly.
भीमो धनंजयान्वेषी कस्तमाछेजिजीविषुः। को हि संजय भीमस्य स्थातुमुत्सहतेऽग्रतः॥
What persons desirous of his life with will venture to stand before that Bhima when he will proceed in search of Dhananjaya? ) Sanjaya, what person venture to stand in front of Bhima.
उद्यताशनिहस्तस्य महेन्द्रस्येव दानवः। प्रेतराजपुरं प्राप्य निवर्तेतापि मानवः॥
For, what Danava will venture to stand before Mahendra with his thunder-bolt uplifted? It is possible for a man to come back from a visit of the regions of Death;
न भीमसेनं सम्प्राप्य निवर्तेत कदाचन। पतङ्गा इव वह्निं ते प्राविशन्नल्पचेतसः॥ ये भीमसेनं संक्रुद्धमन्वधावन् विमोहिताः। यत् तत् सभायां भीमेन मम पुत्रवधाश्रयम्॥ उक्तं संरम्भिणोग्रेण कुरूणां शृण्वतां तदा। तन्नूनमभिसंचिन्त्य दृष्ट्वा कर्ण च निर्जितम्॥
But it not possible for them to come back alive after an encounter with Bhima. Those who foolishly assail Bhimasena when he is inflamed with rage are-like insects rushing on the blazing flames of a fire. Such thinking what the irate Bhima of fearful hands had said to the assembly in the hearing of the Kurus about the slaughter of my sons and beholding the defeat of Karna.
दुःशासनः सह भ्रात्रा भयाद् भीमादुपारमत्। यश्च संजय दुर्बुद्धिरब्रवीत् समितौ मुहुः॥ कर्णो दुःशासनोऽहं च जेष्यामो युधि पाण्डवान्। स नूनं विस्थं दृष्ट्वा कर्ण भीमेन निर्जितम्॥
Dushasana and his brothers ceased to meet Bhima in battle out of fear. That pervert son of mine, O Sanjaya, who repeatedly said in the assembly these words-Karna and Dushasana and I myself will vanquish the Pandavas in battle-surely beholding Karna vanquished and deprived of his car by Bhima.
प्रत्याख्यानाच कृष्णस्य भृशं तप्यति पुत्रकः। दृष्ट्वा भ्रातृन् हतान् संख्ये भीमसेनेन दंशितान्॥
Is now repenting his rejection of Krishna's offer for peace. Beholding his mail-clad brother's slain in battle by Bhimasena.
आत्मापराधे सुमहन्नूनं तप्यति पुत्रकः। को हि जीवितमन्विच्छन् प्रतीपं पाण्डवं व्रजेत्॥
In consequence of his own fault surely my son is being greatly afflicted. What person willing to live still, with hostile intentions, advance against Pandu's son.
भीमं भीमायुधं क्रुद्धं साक्षात् कालमिव स्थितम्। वडवामुखमध्यस्थो मुच्येतापि हि मानवः॥
Bhima, inflamed with rage and armed with dreadful weapons and standing in battle like Death himself? It is possible for a man to escape from Varava fire.
न भीममुखसम्प्राप्तो मुच्येदिति मतिर्मम। न पार्था हि पञ्चाला न च केशवसात्यकी॥
But it is not possible for one to fly from the presence of the enraged Bhima. Indeed neither Arjuna, nor the Panchalas, nor Keshava, nor Satyaki.
जानते युधि संरब्धा जीवितं परिरक्षितुम्। अहो मम सुतानां हि विपन्नं सूत जीवितम्॥
When excited with rage in battle, pays the least regard to his life. Alas, O son of a charioteer, the very lives of my sons are in danger.
संजय उवाच यस्त्वं शोचसि कौरव्य वर्तमाने महाभये। त्वमस्य जगतो मूलं विनाशस्य न संशयः॥
Sanjaya said O descendant of the Kuru dynasty, why are you now lamenting for the present carnage? Surely you are the root of this destruction of the worlds.
स्वयं वैरं महत् कृत्वा पुत्राणां वचने स्थितः। उच्यमानो न गृह्णीघे मर्त्यः पथ्यमिवौषधम्॥
Accepting the counsels of your sons, it was you who provoked all those fierce hostilities. Though advised on the contrary, you did not pay any heed to those advices, like a dying man refusing to take proper medicines,
स्वयं पीत्वा महाराज कालकूटं सुदुर्जरम्। तस्येदानी फलं कृत्स्नमवाप्नुहि नरोत्तम।॥
O best of men, Oking, having drunk the fiercest and most indigestible poison, you should now feel the consequences.
यत् तु कुत्सयसे योधान् युध्यमानान् महाबलान्। तत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथा युद्धमवर्तत॥
The warriors of your army are fighting to the best of their prowess, yet you speak depreciatingly of them. Hear now, as I go on describing how this battle raged.
दृष्ट्वा कर्ण तु पुत्रास्ते भीमसेनपराजितम्। नामृष्यन्त महेष्वासाः सोदर्याः पञ्च भारत॥
Beholding Karna defeated by Bhimasena, the following five and mighty bowmen all brothers.
दुर्मर्षणो दुःसहश्च दुर्मदो दुर्धरो जयः। पाण्डवं चित्रसंनाहास्तं प्रतीपमुपाद्रवन्॥
Namely, Durmarsena, Dussaha, Durmada, Durdhara and Jaya, all clad in beautiful armours, rushed against the son of Pandu with hostile intentions.
ते समन्तान्महाबाहुं परिवार्य वृकोदरम्। दिशः शरैः समावृण्वशलभानामिव व्रजैः॥
Surrounding the mighty-armed Vrikodara on all sides, they began to cover the quarters with their arrows resembling flights of locusts.
आगच्छतस्तान् सहसा कुमारान् देवरूपिणः। प्रतिजग्राह समरे भीमसेनो हसन्निव॥
Then Bhimasena smilingly received those princes of godly presence as they advanced furiously against him.
तव दृष्ट्वा तु तनयान् भीमसेनपुरोगतान्। अभ्यवर्तते राधेयो भीमसेनं महाबलम्॥
Then beholding your sons before the enraged Bhimasena, Radha's son rushed against the mighty-armed Bhima.
विसृजन विशिखांस्तीक्ष्णान् स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्छिलाशितान्। तं तु भीमोऽभ्ययात् तूर्ण वार्यमाणः सुतैस्तव॥
Although opposed by your sons, yet Bhima then quickly rushed against Karna shooting sharp arrows, furnished with golden wings and whetted on stone.
कुरवस्तु ततः कर्ण परिवार्य समन्ततः। अवाकिरन् भीमसेनं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः॥
Thereupon the Kurus surrounding Karna, on all sides, began to shower upon Bhimasena, numerous arrows of depressed knots.
तान् बाणैः पञ्चविंशत्या साश्वान् राजन् नरर्षभान्। ससूतान् भीमधनुषो भीमो निन्ये यमक्षयम्॥
Then that fierce bowman Bhima, with twenty-five arrows dispatched to the abode of Yama, those foremost of men, with their steeds and charioteers.
प्रापतन् स्यन्दनेभ्यस्ते सार्ध सूतैर्गतासवः। चित्रपुष्पधरा भग्ना वातेनेव महाद्रुमाः॥
They then fell down dead from their cars, after their charioteers, like so many mighty trees decked with flowers, overthrown by a hurricane.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम भीमसेनस्य विक्रमम्। संवार्याधिरथिं बाणैर्यञ्जघान तवात्मजान्॥
Then we beheld the wonderful prowess of Bhimasena, inasmuch as he succeeded in slaying your sons and withstanding Karna with his arrows simultaneously.
य वार्यमाणो भीमेन शितैर्बाणैः समन्ततः। सूतपुत्रो महाराज भीमसेनमवैक्षत॥
Opposed on all sides by sharp arrows shot by Bhimasena, that son of Suta, O mighty : monarch, began to eye Bhima.
तं भीमसेनः संरम्भात् क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः। विस्फार्य सुमहचापं मुहुः कर्णमवैक्षत॥
Bhimasena also, with his eyes red in anger and stretching his bow, began to look to Karna.
