The departure of Krishna

ततोऽभ्यनोदयत् कृष्णो युज्यतामिति दारुकम्। मुहूर्तादिव चाचष्ट युक्तमित्येव दारुकः॥
After this, Krishna ordered, Daruka, saying, Let my car be yoked. Within a very short space of time Daruka informed (his master), saying, It has been yoked.

तथैव चानुयात्रादि चोदयामास पाण्डवः। सज्जयध्वं प्रयास्यामो नगरं गजसाह्वयम्॥
The son of Pandu then ordered all his attendants, saying, 'Prepare your selves and be ready. We shall go today to Hastinapur.

इत्युक्ताः सैनिकास्ते तु सज्जीभूता विशाम्पते। आचख्युः सज्जमित्येवं पार्थायामिततेजसे॥
Thus addressed, O king, the army got themselves ready, and informed Pritha's son of immeasurable energy, saying, Everything is ready.

ततस्तौ रथमास्थाय प्रयातौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ। विकुर्वाणौ कथाश्चित्राः प्रीयमाणौ विशाम्पते॥
Then those two friends, viz., Krishna and the son of Pandu, ascended their car and proceeded on the journey, engaged in delightful conversation.

रथस्थं तु महातेजा वासुदेवं धनंजयः। पुनरेवाव्रवीद् वाक्यमिदं भरतसत्तम॥
To Vasudeva seated on the car, the highly energetic Dhananjaya once more said these words, O chief of the Bharatas.

त्वत्प्रसादाज्जयः प्राप्तो राज्ञा वृष्णिकुलोद्वह। नियताः शत्रवश्चापि प्राप्त राज्यमकण्टकम्॥६
O perpetuator of the Vrishni race, the king has got victory through your grace. All his enemies have been killed, and he has recovered his kingdom without a thorn in it.

नाथवन्तश्च भवता पाण्डवा मधुसूदन। भवन्तं प्लमासाद्य तीर्णाः स्म कुरुसागरम्॥
O destroyer of Madhu, on you the Pandavas have got a powerful protector having obtained you for our raft we have crossed the Kuru ocean.

विश्वकर्मन् नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वात्मन् विश्वसत्तम। तथ त्वामभिजानामि यथा चाहं भवन्मतः॥
O you who have this universe for your handiwork, salutations to you, O Soul of the universe, O best of all beings in the universe. I know you in that measure in which I am approved by you.

त्वत्तेजःसम्भवो नित्यं भूतात्मा मधुसूदन। रतिः क्रीडामयी तुभ्यं माया ते रोदसी विभो॥
O destroyer of Madhu, the soul of every creature is always born of your energy. Playful sport is yours. Earth and sky, O lord, are your illusion.

त्वयि सर्वमिदं विश्वं यदिदं स्थाणु जङ्गमम्। त्वं हि सर्वं विकुरुषे भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम्॥
This entire universe, consisting of mobile and iinmobile objects, is established on you. You create, by modification, the four orders of Being.

पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च द्यां चैव मधुसूदन। हसितं तेऽमला ज्योत्स्रा ऋतवश्चेन्द्रियाणि ते॥
You create the Earth, the Sky, and Heaven, O Destroyer of Madhu. The stainless Lunar light is your smile. The seasons are your senses.

प्राणो वायुः सततगः क्रोधो मृत्युः सनातनः। प्रसादे चापि पद्मा श्रीनित्यं त्वयि महामते॥
The ever-moving wind is your breath, and death, existing eternally is your anger. In your grace is the goddess of prosperity. Indeed, Shree is always established in you, O you of the highest intelligence.

रतिस्तुष्टि तिः क्षान्तिर्मतिः कान्तिश्चराचरम्। त्वमेवेह युगसन्तेषु निधनं प्रोच्यसेऽनध॥
You the sport; you their contentment; you their intelligence, you their are are forgiveness, you their inclinations, you their beauty. You are the universe with its mobile and immobile objects. At the end of the age, it is you, O sinless one, who are called destruction.

सुदीर्घेणापि कालेन न ते शक्या गुंणा मया। आत्मा च परमात्मा च नमस्ते नलिनेक्षण॥
I am incapable of reciting all your qualities in course of even a long period. You are the Soul and the Supreme Soul. I bow to you, O you of eyes like the (petals of the) lotus.

विदितो मे सुदुर्धर्ष नारदाद् देवलात् तथा। कृष्णद्वैपायताच्चैव तथा कुरुपितामहात्॥ त्वयि सर्वे समासक्तं त्वमेवैको जनेश्वरः। यच्चानुग्रहसंयुक्तमेतदुक्तं त्वयानध॥ एतत् सर्वमहं सम्यगाचरिष्ये जनार्दन। इदं चाद्भुतमत्यन्तं कृतमस्मत्प्रियेप्सया॥ यत्पापो निहतः संख्ये कौरव्यो धृतराष्ट्रजः। त्वया दग्धं हि तत्सैन्यं मया विजितमाहवे॥
O you who are irresistible. I have learnt it from Narada and Devala and the island-born (Vyasa), and the Kuru grandfather also, that all this (universe) rests on you. You are the one Lord of all creatures. This, O sinless one, that you have described to me on account of your favour for myself, I shall duly accomplish in full, O Janardana! Highly wonderful is this which you have done from desire of doing what is agreeable to us, viz., the destruction in battle of the Kaurava (prince), the son of Dhritarashtra. That army had been burnt by you which I (subsequently) defeated in battle.

भवता तत्कृतं कर्म येनावाप्तो जयो मया। दुर्योधनस्य संग्रामे तव बुद्धिपराक्रमैः॥ कर्णस्य च वधोपायो यथावत् सम्प्रदर्शितः। सैन्धवस्य च पापस्य भूरिश्रवस एव च॥
That feat was achieved by you on account of which victory became mine! By the power of your intelligence was shown the ineans by which was duly effected the destruction of Duryodhana in battle, as also of Karna, as of the sinful king of the Sindhus, and Bhurishravas.

अहं च प्रीयमाणेन त्वया देवकिनन्दन। यदुक्तस्तत् करिष्यामि न हि मेऽत्र विचारणा॥
I shall accomplish all that which, O son of Devaki, pleased with me you have declared to myself. I do not entertain any doubt in this.

राजानं च समासाद्य धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्। चोदयिष्यामि धर्मज्ञ गमनार्थं तवानघ।॥
Going to king Yudhishthira of righteous soul, I shall, O sinless one, urge him to dismiss you, O you who are conversant with every duty.

रुचितं हि ममैतत्ते द्वारकागमनं प्रभो। अचिरादेव द्रष्टा त्वं मातुलं मे जनार्दन॥
O lord, I approve of departure for Dwraka. You shall soon see my maternal uncle, O Janardana.

बलदेवं च दुर्धर्षं तथान्यान् वृष्णिपुङ्गवान्। एवं सम्भाषमाणौ तौ प्राप्तौ वारणसाह्वयम्॥
You shall also see the irresistible Baladeva and other chiefs of the Vrishni race!' This conversing with each other, the two reached the city of Hastinapur.

तथा विविशतुश्चोभौ सम्प्रहृष्टनराकुलम्। तौ गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य गृहं शक्रगृहोपमम्॥
They then, with cheerful hearts, and without any anxiety, entered the palace of Dhritarashtra which resembled the mansion of Shakra.

ददृशाते महाराज धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम्। विदुरं च महाबुद्धि राजानं च युधिष्ठिरम्॥ भीमसेनं च दुर्धर्षं माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ। धृतराष्ट्रमुपासीनं युयुत्सु चापराजितम्॥ गान्धारी च महाप्रज्ञां पृथां कृष्णां च भामिनीम्। सुभद्राद्याश्च ताः सर्वा भरतानां स्त्रियस्तथा॥
They then saw, O monarch king Dhritarashtra, and highly intelligent Vidura, and king Yudhishthira; and the irresistibly Bhimasena, and the two sons of Madri by Pandu; and king Dhritarashtra seated; and the unvanquished Yuyutsu; and Gandhari of great wisdom, and Pritha, and the beautiful Krishna, and the other ladies of Bharata's race with Subhadra for the first.

ददृशाते स्त्रियः सर्वा गान्धारीपरिचारिकाः। ततः समेत्य राजानं धृतराष्ट्रमरिंदमौ॥ निवद्य नामधेये स्वे तस्य पादावगृह्णताम्। गान्धार्याश्च पृथायाश्च धर्मराजस्य चैव हि॥ भीमस्य च महात्मानौ तथा पादावगृह्णताम्। क्षत्तारं चापि संगृह्य पृष्ट्वा कुशलमव्ययम्॥
They also saw all these ladies who used to wait upon Gandhari. Then approaching king Dhritarashtra, those two chastisers of enemies announced their names and touched his feet. Indeed, those great ones also touched the feet of Gandhari and Pritha and king Yudhishthira the just, and Bhima. Embracing Vidura also, they enquired after his well-being.

तैः सार्धं नृपतिं वृद्धं ततस्तौ पर्युपासताम्। ततो निशि महाराजो धृतराष्ट्र: कुरूद्वहान्॥ जनार्दनं च मेधावी व्यसर्जयत वै गृहान्। तेऽनुज्ञाता नृपतिना ययुः स्वं स्वं निवेशनम्॥
In the company of all those persons, Arjuna and Krishna then approached king Dhritarashtra (again). Night came and then the intelligent king Dhritarashtra dismissed all those perpetuators of Kurus' race as also Janardana for retiring to their respective rooms. Permitted by the king, all of them entered their respective apartments.

धनंजयगृहानेव ययौ कृष्णस्तु वीर्यवान्। तत्रार्चितो यथान्यायं सर्वकामरूपस्थितः॥ कृष्णः सुष्वाप मेधावी धनंजयसहायवान्। प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां कृत्वा पौर्वाह्निकी क्रियाम्॥ धर्मराजस्य भवनं जग्मतुः परमार्चितौ। यत्रास्ते स सहामात्यो धर्मराजो महाबलः॥
Krishna of great energy proceeded to the apartments of Dhananjaya, Adored duly and furnished with every object of comfort and enjoyment, Krishna of great intelligence passed the night in happy sleep with Dhananjaya as his companion. When the night passed away and morning came, the two heroes, finishing their morning rites and adoring their persons properly proceeded to the palace of king Yudhishthira the just. There Yudhishthira the just, of great might, sat with his ministers.

तौ प्रविश्य महात्मानौ तद् गृहं परमार्चितम्। धर्मराजं ददृशतुर्देवराजमिवाश्विनौ॥
The two great ones, entering that welladorned chamber, saw king Yudhishthira the just like the two Ashvins seeing the chief of the celestials.

समासाद्य तु राजानं वार्ष्णेयकुरुपुङ्गवौ। निषीदतुरनुज्ञातौ प्रीयमाणेन तेन तौ॥
Meeting the king, he of Vrishni's race, as also that foremost hero of Kuru's race, getting the permission of Yudhishthira who was highly pleased with them, sat themselves down.

ततः स राजा मेधावी विवक्षू प्रेक्ष्य तावुभौ। प्रोवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठो वचनं राजसत्तमः॥
Then the king, king, gifted gifted with great intelligence, seeing those two friends, became desirous of addressing them. Soon that best of kings, that foremost of speakers, addressed them in the following words.

युधिष्ठिर उवाच विवक्षू हि युवां मन्ये वीरौ यदुकुरुद्वहौ। बूतं कर्तास्मि सर्वे वां नचिरान्मा विचार्यताम्॥
Yudhishthira said You heroes, you foremost ones of Yadu's and Kuru's race, it appears that you two are desirous of saying something to me. Do you say what is in your mind. I shall soon satisfy it. Do not hesitate.

इत्युक्तः फाल्गुनस्तत्र धर्मराजानमब्रवीत्। विनीतवदुपागम्य वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः॥
Thus addressed, Phalguna, well conversant with speech, hunibly approached king Yudhishthira the just and then said these words.

अयं चिरोषितो राजन् वासुदेवः प्रतापवान्। भवन्तं समनुज्ञाप्य पितरं द्रष्टुमिच्छति॥
Highly powerful Vasudeva here, O sing, is long absent from home. He wishes, with your permission, to see his sire.

स गच्छेदभ्यनुज्ञातो भवता यदि मन्यसे। आनर्तनगरी वीरस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि॥
Let him go, if you think it proper, to the city of the Anaritas! You should, O hero, grant him permission.

पुण्डरीकाक्ष भद्रं ते गच्छ त्वं मधुसूदन। पुरी द्वारवतीमद्य द्रष्टुं शूरसुतं प्रभो॥
O lotus-eyed one, blessed be you! O slayer of Madhu, do you go this very day to the city of Dvaravati of seeing, O powerful one, that foremost one of Sura's race.

रोचते मे महाबाहो गमनं तव केशव। मातुलश्चिरदृष्टो मे त्वया देवी च देवकी॥
O mighty-armed Keshava, your departure is approved by me! You have not seen my maternal uncle as also the goddess Devaki for a long time.

समेत्य मातुलं गत्वा बलदेवं च मानद। पूजयेथा महाप्राज्ञ मद्वाक्येन यथार्हतः॥
Meeting my maternal uncle and going to Baladeva also, O giver of honours, you well, O you of great wisdom, adore both of them at my word as they deserve.

स्मरेथाश्चापि मां नित्यं भीमं च बलिना वरम्। फाल्गुनं सहदेवं च नकुलं चैव मानद॥
Do you also think of me daily as also of Bhima, that foremost of powerful men, and of Phalguna and Nakula and Sahadeva, O giver of honours.

आनर्तानवलोक्य त्वं पितरं च महाभुज। वृष्णीश्च पुनरागच्छेर्हयमेधे ममानघ॥
Having seen the Anaritas, and your father, O mighty-armed one, and the Vrishnis, you will return to my horse sacrifice, O sinless one!

स गच्छ रत्नान्यादाय विविधानि वसूनि च। यच्चाप्यन्यन्मनोज्ञं ते तदप्यादत्स्व सात्वत॥
you like. Do you then go, taking with you various kinds of gems and various sorts of wealth. Do you, O hero of the Satvata race, also take with you whatever else

इयं च वसुधा कृत्स्ना प्रसादात् तव केशव। अस्मानुपगता वीर निहताश्चापि शत्रवः॥
It is through your grace, O Keshava that the whole Earth, O hero, has come under our sway and all our enemies have been killed.

एवं ब्रुवति कौरव्ये धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। वासुदेवो वरः पुंसामिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥
When king Yudhishthira the just of Kuru's race said so, Vasudeva, that foremost of men, said these words (in reply).

तवैव रत्नानि धनं च केवलं धरा तु कृत्स्ना तु महाभुजाद्य वै। यदस्ति चान्यद् द्रविणं गृहे मम त्वमेव तस्येश्वर नित्यमीश्वरः॥
O mighty-armed one, all jewels and gems, all riches and the entire Earth, belong to you alone. Whatever wealth exists in my house, you, O lord, are always the owner thereof.

तथेत्यथोक्तः प्रतिपूजितस्तदा गदाग्रजो धर्मसुतेन वीर्यवान्। पितृष्वसारं त्ववदद् यथाविधि सम्पूजितश्चाप्यगमत् प्रदक्षिणम्॥
To him Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, said, 'Be it so' and then duly adored (Krishna) the oldest brother, gifted with great energy, of Gada. Vasudeva then proceeded to his paternal aunt (Kunti). Duly honouring her, he circumbulated her body.

तया स सम्यक् प्रतिनन्दितस्तत स्तथैव सर्वैर्विदुरादिभिस्तथा। विनिर्ययौ नागपुराद् गदाग्रजो रथेन दिव्येन चतुर्भुजः स्वयम्॥
He was properly accosted by her in return, and then by all the others having Vidura for their first. The four-arined eldest brother of Gada then started from Nagapura on his excellent car.

रथे सुभद्रामधिरोप्य भाविनी युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते जनार्दनः। पितृष्वसुश्चापि तथा महाभुजो विनिर्ययौ पौरजनाभिसंवृतः॥
Placing his sister, the lady Subhadra, on the car, the mighty-armed Janardana, then, with the permission of both Yudhishthira and (Kunti) his paternal aunt, started, accompanied by a large train of citizens.

तमन्वयाद् वानरवर्यकेतनः ससात्यकिर्माद्रवतीसुतावपि। अगाधबुद्धिर्विदुरश्च माधवं स्वयं च भीमो गजराजविक्रमः॥
The hero who had the foremost of apes on his banner, as also Satyaki, and the two sons of Madravati, and Vidura of incomparable intelligence, and Bhima himself whose tread resembled that of a prince of elephants, all followed Madhava.

निवर्तयित्वा कुरुराष्ट्रवर्धनां स्ततः स सर्वान् विदुरं च वीर्यवान्। जनार्दनो दारुकमाह सत्वरः प्रचोदयाश्वानिति सात्यकिं तथा॥
Janardana of great energy, causing all those cxtenders of the Kuru kingdom and Vidura also to return, addressed Daruka, and Satyaki, saying, 'urge the horses to speed.'

ततो ययौ शत्रुगणप्रमर्दनः शिनिप्रवीरानुगतो जनार्दनः। दिवं तथाऽऽनर्तपुरी प्रतापवान्॥
Then that grinder of enemies, viz., Janardana of great prowess, accompanied by Satyaki, the foremost one of Shini's race, proceeded to the city of the Anarttas, after having killed all his enemies, like He of a hundred sacrifices proceeding to the celestial region.
